We used to think success meant a big house, a steady paycheck, and a predictable routine. That’s what we were working toward—until we weren’t.
The Moment Everything Changed
It wasn’t some grand, well-thought-out plan that led us to full-time travel. It was a disaster of a trip to Florida.
Jason had a work conference, so we packed up the kids, thinking it would be a fun little getaway. Instead, Jason got really sick—so sick that he couldn’t even attend the conference we had traveled for. We were stuck in a hotel room, far from home, and should have been miserable.
But something unexpected happened. Despite the chaos, the kids seemed happier than they had been in a long time—lighter, freer. Without the pressures of “normal” life and the weight of the traditional school system, they thrived. We visited Disney’s Animal Kingdom, and I watched them light up as they learned about different animals, asking cast members hundreds of questions. Learning wasn’t forced. It wasn’t in a classroom. It was alive, effortless, natural.
And then I had a thought.
What if this could be all the time?
It felt ridiculous. Unrealistic. I mean, who just…leaves everything behind to travel?
That night, Jason was still sick in bed, and I casually mentioned the idea to him. He didn’t immediately shut it down but said, “We’d have to sit on it for a while.”
By evening, we were both already deep in YouTube rabbit holes, researching RV models, watching other families do the thing we had just considered impossible.
Maybe it wasn’t crazy after all.
1. Comfort Zones Are Overrated
Leaving behind a “normal” life was terrifying. There were so many unknowns—what if this decision would affect Jason’s business? Jason has a marketing company that he has built up over the last five years. We had legitimate concerns about whether being on the road full-time, without a permanent community base, would impact the word-of-mouth leads that were such a huge part of his business at the time. Would we lose those connections? Would the shift to a completely digital lifestyle affect everything we’d worked so hard to build?
But despite these uncertainties, we kept coming back to one thing: what if we figured it out? What if the risk led us to something we couldn’t even imagine?
Here’s the thing about comfort zones: they’re quiet, predictable, and usually a little boring. Growth happens in the messy, uncertain parts of life. And trust me, we’ve had plenty of those.
And every time fear creeps in, we come back to this simple question: What if it all works out?
Because what if it does? What if the risk leads to something better than we ever imagined?
2. You Need a ‘Figure It Out’ Mindset
There’s no blueprint for this lifestyle. No perfect plan. Just a lot of trial, error, and scrappy determination.
Things go wrong. Plans fall apart. But we figure it out.
And if we can do it, so can you.
3. Experiences > Things (and It’s Not Even Close)
Before we hit the road, we spent years accumulating stuff—more clothes, more furniture, more things we thought we needed. Now? Everything we own fits in an RV and a single storage unit for things we felt we couldn’t part with but we don’t miss any of it.
Instead, we collect moments:
– Watching our kids search for creatures in rock pools, completely fascinated.
– Sitting on a rock in Arches National Park, just taking it all in.
– Pulling over in the middle of nowhere to catch an unexpected, breathtaking view.
These are the things we’ll remember.
4. ‘Success’ Isn’t One-Size-Fits-All
Society tells us what success should look like. A 9-to-5. A mortgage. A retirement plan. And if that’s your dream, amazing—go for it.
But if something inside you is whispering (or maybe screaming) that there’s more out there? Listen.
People will have opinions. They’ll question your choices. They might even think you’re crazy. Let them.
They don’t have to get it. You do.
For us, success looks like freedom. It looks like waking up in a new place whenever we feel like it. It looks like our kids learning through real-world experiences instead of textbooks. It looks like knowing we’re spending our days exactly how we want to.
So… Would We Do It Again?
Absolutely. A thousand times over.
This life isn’t perfect. It’s not always easy. But it’s ours. And that’s what matters.
If you’ve ever dreamed of shaking things up, taking a leap, or rethinking what success means to you… maybe this is your sign.
Because the truth is, you can always go back to stability. But what if you don’t have to?
